In July series Bulls were back in action but by August series they had indeed formed a strong grip on Dalal Street. The
benchmark index extended the gains to almost touch the psychological mark of 18000 but on account of profit taking at the
higher levels concluded the series on an optimistic note with the gains of around twelve percent in a single series. This
wouldn’t have been possible without the banking index which clearly outshined by rallying seventeen percent in August
series.
During the series, we observed addition of decent bullish bets in Nifty as well as BankNifty and looking at the open interest addition
series on series it seems majority of the longs have been rolled over. Rollover in Nifty and BankNifty stood at 82% and 83%
respectively. Stronger hands turned net buyers in August month, they bought to the tune of Rs. 18472 crores till date. Their buying
in equities was the major trigger for the improved sentiment in our market. In index and stock futures segment, they preferred
exiting longs and rolled over shorts in the coming series. Their ‘Long Short Ratio’ plunged to 35% from 57% series on series. Going
ahead, we need to keep a close tab on FIIs index futures trades but otherwise the above rollover data is not suggesting any sign of
caution. For now, the recent lows around 17350 should be treated as strong demand zone; whereas, on the upside 17800 followed
by 18000 remains a sturdy hurdle for our market. Recently, we saw individual counters giving spectacular moves and we sense
such moves are likely to continue. Traders are hence advised to identify the apt themes and potential movers within the same for
outperforming opportunities.
